Vital Questions to Ask Yourself When Creating Information Products

by Lee Fecteau on December 29, 2009

In Success Secrets of the Online Marketing Superstars by Mitch Meyerson, Mitch and marketing expert Michael Port outline the vital steps for creating your own product to sell on the Internet:

Question 1: How will I Conceptualize  My Product? First figure out the product your are able to make.  What are you the most “Gung-ho” about?  What product are you the most excited about making?  A book, audio interview, video tutorial, home-study course?  Use the Mind Map tool that I talked about in How to Easily Develop Ideas and Content for Your E-Book.

Question 2: What resources do I have available to me? What are your talents and natural gifts?  What expertise have you gained through your career or hobbies?  You don’t have to know everything before you get started.  “Learning in Action” is a great way to enhance your existing skills as you build your product.  Who do you know that can help you gain the knowledge you need for the product?  Can you interview your contacts to create a product?  The interview could be recorded and sold (with their permission or as a partner) as a product as well.  Other resources to consider are:

  • time
  • technology
  • finances
  • personal

Question 3: What do my customers want? How will your product be different from other products out there?  Will you be able to exceed customers expectations by “overdelivering” on your promises?  Write out your boldest promises and make it an essential part of the announcement of your product.

Question 4: What story will help sell my product?

  • Expert Story — Here is what I have done, this is why I think it works, and how to do it like me.
  • Interviewer Story — Compile information from other experts and publish it.
  • Researcher Story — Gather information from a variety of sources and put it all together neatly in one place.  A one-stop shop for their needs and desires.
  • “Repurpose” Story — Use and modify information for a different purpose.  Use a Public Domain work or get permission to do this.

These vital questions will get you further down the road to making your information product a reality!
